Lai Mohammed Under Pressure As Nigerians Digest Lekki Tollgate Panel Report
The minister of information Alhaji Lai Mohammed was on Tuesday morning under social media pressure after the report of the Lagos Panel on the Lekki Tollgate EndsSARS protest confirmed the killing of several persons by the Nigerian Army.
It would be recalled that Alhaji Lai Mohammed had been at the front of the government campaign to denounce claims of killings during the suppression of the Lekki EndSARS protest on October 20, 2020. The minister has since then repeatedly claimed that no one was killed even as he strongly rebuffed news reports from international broadcast organisations to the contrary.
However, the panel in its report released on Monday, November 15, 2021 disclosed that 11 people were killed at the Lekki Toll Gate, four missing and presumed dead. The panel also disclosed that 26 protesters received gunshot injuries or got injured while nine others were assaulted by soldiers and police.
The report put a lie to the refrain of the federal authorities and the Nigerian Army that no one was killed on account of the shooting.
Given his front role in pushing the government narrative, it was not surprising that Lai Mohammed became the face of the social media reactions to the report.
Among the prominent personalities to put Lie Mohammed to task was Comedian, Okon Lagos who in a post on his Instagram page said:
