US Vice-President Kamala Harris will on Friday extend her political mileage as she becomes the first woman and black American to act as US President as Joe Biden undergoes a health check.

President Biden is expected to transfer power to Ms Harris while he is under anaesthesia for a routine colonoscopy on Friday, the White House said in a statement.

The medical check is coming on the eve of President Biden’s 79th birthday.

As acting president, Ms. Harris will take control of the US forces and control of the nuclear buttons that are permanently besides the US President.

“The vice-president will work from her office in the West Wing during this time,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement.

The press statement availed that the temporary transfer of powers in such circumstances was not unprecedented haven happened severally in the past as provided in the US constitution.

“As was the case when President George W Bush had the same procedure in 2002 and 2007,” her statement said.
