Probe Ordered As Two Lions Escape From Transport Container
Two lions were safely tranquilized and taken to a secure facility after escaping from a container at a Singapore airport.
Singapore Airlines confirmed the lions escaped at Changi Airport, but remained contained by safety netting until being shot with a tranquilizer gun by a team from the Mandai Wildlife Group.
The group took the animals, and five others in the same shipment, to a facility to recover from sedation.
The lions arrived at the airport from another country and had been due to depart the hub for a destination overseas. The lions’ country of origin and intended destination were not released.
Singapore Airlines said an investigation is underway to determine how they escaped from the container.
Meanwhile, before the news of the escape of the lions from the container, GreenWhiteGreen GWG had reported how starvation hit Imo State Zoological Garden and Wildlife Park claiming the lives of over 250 animals valued at over N38 million in the zoo.
The park, located at Nekede Anicent Kingdom in Owerri West Local Government Area (LGA) of the state, houses different species of animals including three lions.
Sources close to the garden disclosed that the surviving animals are near death due to hunger.
It was learnt that it cost more than N1.2 million to feed the about 500 animals in a month with some government subvention which is longer forthcoming. This is now threatening the extinction of the Zoological Garden established in 1976.
