How Chelsea Set New FA Cup Record Against Chesterfield
By Eze Dike
Chelsea put in a scintillating performance on Saturday night as they breezed past fifth-tier side Chesterfield 5-1 at Stamford Bridge into the fourth round of the FA Cup setting a new record along the way.
The big names took centre stage as Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech all got on the score sheet. Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel lined up a team mixed with youth and experience, as 17-year-old defender Lewis Hall made his full debut and became the club’s youngest player to start an FA cup game. It was quite a routine win for the champions of Europe, as they were favourites prior to the game.
Considered favourites also to win this season’s FA cup, Chelsea capped their win with a new record in the competition, becoming the first club in history to advance to the 4th round of the FA cup in 24 consecutive seasons. A huge accomplishment by The Blues who were the previous holders of the record last season.
Thomas Tuchel’s side who have increasingly looked razor-sharp since his appointment clinching a 2nd UEFA Champions League trophy and also the UEFA Super Cup have transformed into a resilient side, challenging on all fronts in all competitions.
The Chelsea faithful are finally getting what they were promised when Thomas Tuchel was appointed in January, 2021. The German said “We would build a team that no one wants to play against”. That seems to be the case with this current Chelsea team.
With the record set on Saturday and after conquering Europe last season, The Blues will be looking forward to doing so on the domestic front as they go in search of a 9th FA cup triumph. They will even be more determined to do so after back-to-back disappointments in the two previous editions of the competition, falling short to 14 time winners Arsenal and Leicester City in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
