Is Sunday Dare Nigeria’s Worst Sports Minister? Debate Rages After Basketball Fiasco
After failing to qualify Nigeria for the football World Cup, the decision to pull out of the International Basketball World Games even after the female team qualified for the games has stoked a debate as to whether Sunday Dare is the worst sports minister in Nigerian history.
In a raging debate on social media on Thursday, the records of Mr Dare are being compared with the notabke fooleries of his predecessor, Solomon Dalung.
Incidentally, both of them served under President Muhammadu Buhari.
The debate as to Dare peaked on Thursday following the decision of the International Basketball Association, FIBA to replace the Nigerian female team (D’Tigress) with Mali at the 2022 FIBA games.
Recall that FIBA was notified following the decision of President Buhari to withdraw the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) from all international basketball competitions and activities for a period of two years.
However, after subsequent communications with the NBBF, and despite FIBA’s request, it became obvious that after the government’s decision, the NBBF was unable to confirm its participation in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022.

Remarkably, the Nigerian government’s decision was upon its failure to resolve the quarrels within the factions in the NBBF.
Even more, the girls who qualified Nigeria for the games were mostly based abroad and self-sponsored.
This recent development has stirred numerous reactions from social media users who did not hesitate to drag the minister of sports, Sunday Dare over the carelessness that was brought to the issue.
Meanwhile, at the height of the crises in the house of basketball and the country, Mr Dare travelled with President Buhari on a state visit to Spain.
Nigerians have been seething over the development. See reactions below:
@firstladyship: Sunday Dare is reckless, but GMB had no business pulling the Girls out of ALL Int’l Basketball competitions for a whooping 2 yrs.? There are many ways the FG could have resolved the power tussle inside the Basketball Federation. Like Buhari, Abacha made Nigeria miss 2 World Cups
@mikemaiyaki: Posterity will not be kind to Sunday Dare as he will be remembered, for many years to come, as the man RESPONSIBLE for taking Nigeria Basketball backwards BY DECADES for ostracizing our Basketballers from the world. What a shame.
@olywal: From the onset, i was never convinced about Sunday Dare. When you bring a novice to run the rule over a huge industry like sports, this is what you get.
Sunday Dare has made Solomon Dalung look like a genius.
Does the Government even see Sports in Nigeria as an industry?
@sodiqstar01: In a sane country, Sunday Dare shouldn’t be a Minister of sports. He has failed IN EVERY SPORT!
Fxck every single one of you that had a hand in this. Those ladies played their hearts out just to qualify. You have been owing them nw you’re depriving them of reaping what they sowed
@chiiebubechii: Giving your all to qualify for a tournament, only to get disqualified due to a dumb Sunday Dare, inconsiderate NBBF leaders and Buhari. Those ladies deserve better.
@owoblow861: Sunday Dare has got to be the worst Sports Minister in Nigeria’s history. Imagine beating Solomon Dalong to crass incompetence? Smh.
