Argentina Finalissima

Inspired by the ageless Messi, Argentina stormed into a formidable 3-0 win in the prestigious finalissima showdown thanks to strikes from Lautaro Martinez, Angel Di Maria and Paulo Dybala.

Dybala capped Argentina’s rout, but after a disappointing season with Paris Saint-Germain by his sky-high standards, it was the sight of Messi back to his imperious best that took the spotlight. The 34-year-old’s eye-catching display featured two assists and was worthy of his rare appearance at one of football’s great cathedrals.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that The Finalissima, is a one-off match between the champions of South America and the most recent winners of the European Championship.

This year’s The Finalissima (Grand Final in Italian) was played in Wembley Stadium, London.

Indeed, it was another memorable moment for Argentina, who have qualified for this year’s World Cup as they extend the golden afterglow from the victory over Brazil that ended their 28-year wait to win the Copa America in 2021.

For Italy, it was a disappointing return to Wembley 11 months after they beat England on penalties in the Euro 2020 final. Roberto Mancini’s team have gone into a steep decline since that memorable triumph. They failed to qualify for the World Cup after suffering a humiliating loss to North Macedonia in their play-off semi-final and now went away with a diminishing loss in the Finalissima.

Here are key facts from the game as Argentina beat Italy 3-0;

• After his goal in the finalissima, Angel Di Maria has now scored in consecutive international cup finals for the first time in his career. First, the winner against Brazil in the 2021 Copa America and now a goal against Italy in the finalissima.

• Argentina are now on a 32-game unbeaten run and are yet to lose a match in three years. The 2021 Copa America champions are only five games away from reaching Italy’s record streak for most international matches unbeaten (37).

• Lionel Messi has now won the second trophy of his international career with Argentina after winning the Copa America last year, which means he and Cristiano Ronaldo now have the same number of international trophies (2)

• Argentina have now retained the Finalissima trophy after previously winning it back in 1993, captained by Diego Maradona.
