Akwa Ibom APC Crisis Deepens As Akpanudoedehe Quits, Picks NNPP Ticket
Immediate past national secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator John James Akpanudoedehe has resigned his membership of the party and was on Monday elected as the Akwa Ibom State governorship candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP.
His exit has immediately deepened the crisis in the Akwa Ibom State chapter of the party.
Akpanudoedehe offered his resignation in a letter addressed to the Ward Chairman of Offot Ward 6, Uyo.
GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the resignation is a fallout of the crisis in the state chapter of the APC which has seen a number of stakeholders pitched in battle with a faction of the party led by Senator Godswill Akpabio, the minister of Niger Delta Affairs.
Akpabio, the immediate past governor of the state who is also a presidential aspirant on the platform of the APC had gotten control of the state structure of the party despite pending court issues.
It would be recalled that the state congress held in October 2021 had elected Austin Ekanem an ally of Akpanudoedehe’s as state chairman. However, the Senator Abdullahi Adamu led leadership of the party had recently switched recognition to Mr. Stephen Ntukekpo, an ally of Akpabio’s.
Akpanudoedehe, in a riposte in a letter to his ward chairman wrote: “I write to notify you of my resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), forthwith.
“Henceforth, I cease to be a member of the APC in my ward (ward 6 in Uyo LGA) or anywhere for that matter. I hereby relinquish all rights, which inured to me as a member of the APC, member of the National Advisory Council and member of National Caucus of the APC.
“This decision to part ways with the APC, is a tough one, but leadership entails adherence to the wishes of the vast majority of associates, allies and supporters, who have shown fidelity overtime and have now witnessed the obduracy of the APC in handling the candidates selection processes in Akwa Ibom State.”
Akpanudoedehe fighting from the NNPP side is expected to throw the contest in Akwa Ibom into a three man race.
