Governor Lalong explains his mention of the pope in defending his role as chief marketer of the APC's Muslim-Muslim ticket

Governor Simon Lalong has explained why he brought in the name of the Pope to ward off attacks on his decision to lead the campaign for the All Progressives Congress, APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Senator Kashim Shettima.

Against the background of his appointment following what critics claimed as the relegation of Northern Christians in the APC ticket, he said that he had no intention of denigrating the name of the pope in making his defence.

GWG reports that after he was accosted on his decision to lead the campaign despite criticisms from Northern Christian groups, Lalong had told reporters at the Presidential Villa that the pope had not told him not to lead the Muslim-Muslim campaign.

Against the background of strong criticisms against Lalong in using the name of the pope to justify his decision on the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket, he said that his mention of the Pope was a mark of reverence, and not ridicule as perceived by some Nigerians.

He alleged that part of the interview he granted was distorted by political rivals to diminish him by “propaganda by politicians.”

In a statement issued in Jos on Thursday by Makut Macham, his Director of Press and Public Affairs, he said he has the highest regard for Christians and Church Authority and will continue to work hard in promoting the interests of Christians and adherents of other religions.
