Why Delta APC Is Jubilating Over Oborevwori’s Emergence As PDP Guber Candidate
The Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC was on Tuesday openly jubilating that Speaker Sheriff Oborevwori had emerged as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to confront its unchallenged candidate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege in the governorship election.
The party in a statement did not hide its belief that Oborevwori was in its perspective the weakest link in the 2023 governorship election in the state.
GWG reports that Oborevwori’s candidacy had been challenged by David Edevbie, who took second in the PDP primaries. He had challenged Speaker Oborevwori’s qualification following issues about the speaker’s credentials.
Jubilating over Oborevwori’s victory, the Director, Communications and Media Strategy of the Campaign Organisation, Ima Niboro, described it as good news for APC.
The APC described Oborevwori as a weak and compromised candidate who will find it impossible to explain why Deltans should give him and his fellow travellers another opportunity to mortgage the future of the state.
He called on Deltans to resist Oborevwori, PDP and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa with their ballots, insisting that the PDP Governorship candidate who could not run a House of Assembly, definitely cannot govern a complex state like Delta.
His words: “Oborevwori’s victory at the Appeal court in the certificate fraud case against him by David Edevbie is good news. Oborevwori is the obvious weak link in the 2023 guber race.
“What more can you ask for when you have a Sheriff whose only claim to fame is a specious “street credibility,“ in a state gripped by a selfsame street anomie, a soaring crime wave, unemployment, greed and wickedness.
However, there is little doubt that the APC in Delta and its candidate, Omo-Agege are jubilating that the party is not confronting Edevbie whose credentials and finesse the opposition party feared would be more difficult for the party to challenge.
Even more, the APC is also happy that it would have to deal with a divided opposition as it seems almost impossible for the Edevbie camp to align itself with Oborevwori ahead of the election.
Irrespective of the achievements of the Okowa administration, Omo-Agege and his supporters are going to campaign with the message that the outgoing governor is foisting Oborevwori as a stooge. Why that is almost the case with governors everywhere, the Omo-Agege campaign will be happy to keep that message resonating everywhere that Oborevwori is not his man and a compromised candidate to push the outgoing governor’s agenda.
Even more, the Omo-Agege camp is also jubilating that the emergence of Oborevwori as the PDP candidate will enable the Delta APC candidate tap into the goodwill of Chief James Ibori, the penultimate governor of the state who remains influential in the politics of the state. Ibori has not hidden his preference for Edevbie who served him as commissioner for finance for eight years.
Omo-Agege and Okowa, just as Edevbie were in the Ibori government at a time that Oborevwori according to his critics was outside on the streets. With Edevbie out, and the Ibori camp looking for another leg man to continue its legacy the permutation is that Omo-Agege will for them be a more probable option.
It is for this and many others that Omo-Agege and the APC in Delta are said to be jubilating with the emergence of Oborevwori as the Delta State candidate of the PDP.
