Paris Metro Station Renamed After Elizabeth II, French Mayors Refuse To Fly Flags At Half Mast

As a tribute to the British queen during her funeral, a metro station on the Champs-Elysees in Paris has been renamed Elizabeth II for the day. However, an order for flags to be flown at half mast in memory of the late monarch was being snubbed by several mayors across the country.

Signs in the George V metro station, named after the queen’s grandfather, were changed on Monday to show respect for the British monarch, who will be buried later after a service in London.

“We wanted to participate in the day of mourning by putting up the sign ‘Elizabeth II 1926-2022’ in the George V station on Line 1,” a RATP spokeswoman told AFP.

On Tuesday, the Paris metro station will be changed back to George V.

The prime minister has ordered that French flags be flown at half mast on public buildings, but a small number of mayors are defying the order.

Patrick Proisy, the mayor of Faches-Thumesnil in northeastern France, has stated that he will refuse to lower the flag on public buildings in his village.

Despite his condolences following the queen’s death, he stated that such a move violated France’s republican principles of “Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity.”

On September 10, he wrote on social media, “No concept is further from ‘equality’ than monarchy.”
