Chief of Defence Staff, General LEO Irabor has lamented the general decline in the use of mother languages and the Ika language in particular.

He spoke in Abuja on Sunday at the public presentation and launch of Iten, a compendium of Ika proverbs and idioms at a ceremony graced by some of the leading personalities from Ika South and Ika North East Local Government Areas of Delta State.

Iten was compiled by Onukokome, a pan Ika group.

The book is a consolidation on previous endeavours and diversification into other genres and approach towards stimulating interest in and preserving Ika language.

The CDS from Aliokpu, Agbor in Ika South Local Government Area applauded the book saying it will help to preserve the language which is being eroded by urbanism and other factors.

The Chairman of the occasion, Nicholas Dikeriehi Orogodo Okoh, former Archbishop of Abuja Province and Primate of the Church of Nigeria in the Anglican Communion lamented that the younger generations from Ika land are not able or fluent in speaking the language.

He commended the Onukokome for the compilation, asking for more efforts in same direction.

Earlier, in his introduction, a member of the Onukokome team, Felix Efan Ndidi said the work was done to help more of the sons and daughters of Ika especially those born outside to learn the language.

He disclosed that they are plans to set up an all Ika speaking radio station.

The book was reviewed in Ika language by Pst Bienose.

Among the leading personalities present at the occasion were several Ika sons and daughters including Barr.
