Dollar Redesign To Affect Queen Elizabeth II In Australian Bank Note
The Australian Reserve Bank has stated that a design honoring the First Australians will take the place of a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the country’s $5 (five dollar) note as the country redesigns its bank notes.
The Australian Reserve Bank announced the adjustment, which prevents the Royal Family from appearing on any of the nation’s banknotes. Since 1992, the front of the Australian $5 note has featured the image of the Queen.
As the bank consults with First Australians on how the new design may best represent their culture and history, Queen Elizabeth II will nevertheless remain prominent for a number of years, according to reports.
The Australian parliament building in Canberra will continue to be depicted on the reverse side of the banknote.
Jim Chalmers, the treasurer, said:
This choice, made independently by the Reserve Bank after consulting the government, is a chance to achieve a good balance in this situation.
He highlighted that the monarch will continue to appear on all Australian coins, but noted that the $5 bill would speak more to the nation’s history and tradition.
In a survey conducted by Ipsos at the end of the previous year, 54% of Australians said their nation’s formal links to the British monarchy should be severed after the passing of the Queen.
Republican Prime Minister Anthony Albanese disallowed a monarchy vote when his administration took office in September of last year.
