Netflix To Make $2.5bn New Investments On Korean Content After Success Of ‘Squid Game’
Netflix is to invest $2.5 billion in South Korean content in response to the success of “Squid Game,” the most recent indication of the culture’s exploding global appeal.
Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos made the announcement on April 24 following a meeting with South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, who is in the United States for a six-day visit.
“We were able to make this decision because we have great confidence that the Korean creative industry will continue to tell great stories,” Sarandos said in a statement. President Yoon hailed the announcement as a “great opportunity” for Korean creators and Netflix.
The phenomenal success of K-pop artists like BTS and Blackpink, as well as movies like the Academy Award-winning “Parasite,” has led to increased interest in South Korean music and film around the world in recent years.
Upon its release in 2021, the Netflix series “Squid Game,” which chronicles the tale of indebted competitors in a fatal competition for a financial reward, swiftly surpassed 1.6 billion views to become the streaming service’s most popular show of all time.
According to Sarandos, the investment shows Netflix’s faith in South Korean filmmakers’ ability to “continue to tell great stories.”
Thanks to the engaging storylines of the Korean producers, he remarked, “It is incredible that the love for Korean shows has led to a wider interest in Korea.”
