Fuel Subsidy Removal: Doctors Demand 550% Salary Increase

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has expressed disappointment over the government’s failure to review the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and have now raised their demand in line with the increased cost of living following the removal of fuel subsidy.

The doctors who initially requested a minimum 200% increase in CONMESS have now revised their demand to 550% due to the removal of fuel subsidy, which they say has resulted in a significant rise in fuel prices and the overall cost of living. The doctors warned of difficulties faced in commuting to work and fulfilling their professional responsibilities as a result of these factors.

Despite a warning strike and subsequent conciliatory meetings, resolutions agreed upon have yet to be implemented by the government, leading to further disappointment from the doctors. As their ultimatum expired, the doctors extended the deadline by an additional two weeks, setting July 19, 2023, as the final date for the government to meet their demands. Failure to do so, they say may result in a potential disruption of industrial harmony in the health sector.

The doctors’ other demands include the immediate payment of the 2023 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) as allocated in the 2023 budget, along with the settlement of outstanding arrears, including hazard allowances, skipping arrears from 2014-2016, and the arrears of the minimum wage adjustment. Additionally, they called for the prompt release and implementation of guidelines for the one-for-one replacement of clinical staff to address the shortage of healthcare professionals nationwide.
