Israel Blames Hamas As Gaza War Resumes
Explosions and gunfire have been reported in Gaza as Israel and Hamas resumed war after the seven-day ceasefire came to an end early on Friday morning.
GWG.ng quotes Israeli defence officials as accusing Hamas of violating the ceasefire with the firing of rockets toward Israel earlier in the morning. The rockets were intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome missile defence system.
While the ceasefire lasted, 110 hostages held by Hamas comprising of Israeli civilians and foreigners were released while 240 Palestinian prisoners and detainees held by Israel were similarly released.
It is, however, reported that mediators from Qatar, Egypt and the United States who helped broker the initial ceasefire continue to meet to broker another ceasefire.
GWG.ng International Affairs Editor reports that Israel was peeved by the failure of Hamas to produce at least 10 living Israelis in exchange for 30 Palestinian prisoners. Hamas it was learnt had sought to bring dead Israelis in their place, a proposal that was sternly rejected.
The crisis was sparked on October 7 when Hamas attacked Southern Israel killing at least 1,200 persons and capturing about 240 who were taken as hostages inside Gaza Strip.
Israel’s fiery response has led to the destruction of a wide area of Gaza with 14,800 being killed according to the Hamas-run Ministry of Health.
The resumed war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza underlines the limitations of the optimism that came with the efforts of international mediators.
