A new narrative of the Aso Rock resolution of the political crisis in Rivers State that has pitched Governor Simi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike emerged on Thursday night with the assertion that the governor was threatened and forced into signing the agreement.

Mr David Briggs, a former chairman of Akuko-Toru Local Government Area who claimed to have been present at the meeting said that President Bola Tinubu walked into the meeting with a written agreement which he asked Fubara, Wike and other stakeholders present to sign.

He said that there was no discussion as to the contents of the agreement he claimed was produced by the president.

Briggs who said that the governor was intimidated and threatened by the president who he claimed brought out the powers of his office with subtle threats to whip the governor into line.

Speaking to newsmen on Thursday, he said:

“We were invited for a meeting but that was not a meeting. A meeting means opinion will be sought, there will be discussions between both parties and resolutions will be reached.

David Briggs: Fubara was threatened to sign agreement with Wike

“But that was not what happened. What happened was that Mr President walked in with a written resolution, addressed us and declared that what he had in his hand was a presidential proclamation, a presidential directive.

“At a point he withdrew and emphasized that he is the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, therefore he can whip and anybody who tends to say no to what he is saying it has consequences. That is not democratic. That in a simple layman’s word is a threat.

“He made the resolution but refused to read the resolution and handed the resolution to Dr Odili to read and he would interject and each time he interjected, it came with a subtle polite, smiling insult. And thereafter, he asked the governor to speak.

“Let’s get it quite clear if you are in the position of the governor what will you do? Get up and go? Say no to Mr President with that kind of subtle but energetic threats?

“Our governor is very intelligent. Very humble but very intelligent. Not just intelligent but committed to the values of governance. At that point, I didn’t expect Mr President to talk about himself, but he should talk about the people, what do the people want?

“We the people is more important than I the President, than I the governor.

“He gave that order and asked them to sign and the governor simply made his statement, his statement is itself full of wisdom,” Briggs said of the agreement for peace between Wike and Fubara.
