Rivers speaker resigned

Factional speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Dr Edison Ehie who led the four-member team aligned to Governor Simi Fubara has resigned as speaker and his membership of the House of Assembly.

Ehie resigned as speaker and his members of the Rivers State House in a letter directed to the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC that was dated December 29, 2023, Prof Mahmood Yakubu.

GWG.ng reports that the move was being seen in some circles as part of the peace process as earlier broached by President Bola Tinubu towards resolving the crisis between Governor Simi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

However, the decision to step down from the Rivers State House of Assembly may have further weakened the governor’s base in the legislative House.

The letter read thus:

”This is to inform you of my voluntary resignation as Speaker and member of the 10th River State House of Assembly representing Ahoada- East Constituency II with effect from the date of this letter (29th, December 2023).

“I wish to deeply appreciate my colleagues and the people of my Constituency for the rare opportunity to serve and hope to continue to give my utmost best in service to River State subsequently.

“Kindly accept the assurance of my highest esteem at all times.”

The import of why Ehie resigned as speaker are expected to play out in the near future in Rivers State.
