The Nigeria eSports Federation has annouced its successful acquisition of hosting rights for the eSports qualifiers involving 42 African nations, scheduled for March.

The qualifiers to be hosted in Nigeria will determine those to represent the continent at the 2024 eSports World Cup holding in China.

Agbor Ayuk, Chairman of the Nigeria eSports Federation, shared this momentous update during an interview with journalists in Calabar on Monday. He emphasized the collaborative efforts with key entities such as the Federal Ministry of Sports Development, Nigeria Universities Games Association (NUGA), and the Confederation of Africa eSports.

Ayuk shed light on the transformative journey of eSports, emphasizing that what was once perceived as a mere leisure activity has evolved into a lucrative avenue for individuals to earn money while indulging in their passion. “In the past, eSports was seen as a leisure activity, but now it’s an avenue for revenue generation. With over three billion gamers worldwide, Nigeria should actively participate,” remarked Ayuk, exuding enthusiasm for the prospects that lie ahead.

The Chairman delved into the federation’s commitment to raising awareness about eSports across Nigeria. Out of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), 25 states, including Cross River, have affiliated associations with the Nigeria eSports Federation, showcasing the expanding reach of this dynamic domain.

Ayuk acknowledged the hurdles faced by the Federation, notably parental misconceptions about eSports, despite its positive impact on children’s intellectual development. Data availability in Nigeria posed another challenge, but Ayuk expressed gratitude for the introduction of the 5G network by a major telecommunications company, addressing a critical aspect for eSports enthusiasts.

Highlighting the professional nature of gaming, Ayuk emphasized the association’s dedication to providing certifications through training programs accessible on its website. He underlined the convenience of eSports training, allowing individuals to hone their skills from the comfort of their homes.

In closing, Ayuk emphasized the global connectivity of eSports, showcasing its ability to unite players from diverse corners of the world, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared passion. The future of eSports in Nigeria looks promising, and Ayuk’s insights reflect the federation’s unwavering commitment to navigating challenges and fostering a thriving eSports community.
