The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has taken a firm stance against Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), by shutting down the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

This decisive action by the NLC stems from deep-seated grievances against the Abure leadership and his controversial plans for the party’s national convention scheduled for the end of March.

At the heart of the discontent of the NLC discontent are allegations against Abure of orchestrating a “secret” national convention without consulting key stakeholders, a move seen as unilateral and against the party’s constitution.

The planned convention, aimed at re-electing Abure as the party’s national chairman, has raised concerns about financial mismanagement and a disregard for democratic principles within the party.

The NLC’s protest serves as a demand for Abure’s immediate resignation. As a historic ally of the Labour Party, the labor union accuses Abure of plotting to undermine the party’s integrity from within.

The demands of the NLC are straightforward: Abure must step down, and a transitional committee should be established to oversee a legitimate, inclusive national convention that upholds the democratic values of the Labour Party.

This conflict has not only caused friction between Abure and the NLC but has also strained relations with the House of Representatives caucus, highlighting a widening divide within the party’s leadership.

The NLC’s actions, including the picketing of Labour Party’s state secretariats across the country, underscore a significant power struggle that threatens the party’s stability and unity.
