A Nigerian lawyer has recounted his decision to leave a WhatsApp group created for a wedding after the groom, who is not a close friend, requested an exorbitant contribution from participants.

In a post shared online, the lawyer revealed that he initially felt excited about attending the wedding after a long time. However, his enthusiasm waned when the groom-to-be unveiled the financial expectations for attendees.

According to the lawyer, the groom asked everyone in the group to contribute a minimum of N200,000 towards the wedding expenses. Additionally, participants were also expected to pay for family fabric, commonly known as asoebi.

“After the preliminaries about aso ebi and all, he went on to say those of us on the group will be the aso ebi/groom’s men and we will contribute at least 200k each for the wedding”- He wrote.

The lawyer expressed shock at the steep financial demand, especially considering the deadline for payments set for the end of May, ahead of the wedding scheduled for June.

Disillusioned by the hefty contribution request, the lawyer opted to quietly exit the WhatsApp group and block the groom-to-be on all social media platforms, including WhatsApp following the demands on the wedding contribution.
