The Police Command in Cross River, on Sunday, confirmed the kidnap of three students of the University of Calabar (Unical).

The spokesperson of the command, SP Irene Ugbo, who gave the confirmation, said the students were abducted on Thursday night at one of the university hostels inside the campus.

Ugbo, who didn’t give details of the abduction, however, said the police were working in collaboration with other agencies to rescue the students.

A source who pleaded anonymity gave the names of the students as Ojang Precious Ebejin, a 200-level student of the Department of Medicine and Surgery, Ugwu Chukwuemeka, a 300-level student of the Department of Genetics and Biotechnology, and Damilola Dickson, a final-year student of the same Department. GWG.ng reports that the kidnap of the three students of UNICAL is coming after the university has been in the news over the alleged involvement of one of its lecturers in a sexual harassment case.

The kidnap incident also came just after the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, inaugurated some completed projects that were abandoned at (UniCal) in commemoration of the institution’s 36th convocation.

The projects, which included the Mass Communication Department building, three pavilions for lectures and examinations and two hostels, were financed by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

Addressing newsmen in Calabar after the inauguration, Mamman said he was quite impressed with the completion of the projects in the institution.
