Outrage Over TV Commercial Depicting Nuns Receiving Potato Chips For Communion (Video)

Christians in Italy have voiced their outrage over a television commercial that depicts nuns receiving crispy chips instead of communion wafers, calling the ad “blasphemy” and demanding its removal from the airwaves.

The controversial commercial by Amica Chips features young nuns in a convent who joyfully discover that their communion wafer is actually a potato chip. The scene includes a mother superior figure overseeing the nuns’ delight, with the revelation that she had substituted the communion wafers for potato chips in the tabernacle, where the wafers are typically kept.

Giovanni Baggio, the head of AIART, an Italian Catholic organization monitoring radio and television, condemned the ad as blasphemous, stating that it offends the sensitivity of millions of practicing Catholics by trivializing the significance of the communion wafer, which symbolizes the body and blood of Christ.

The Catholic newspaper Avvenire also criticized the commercial, stating in an editorial that it reduces Christ to a potato chip, debasing and vilifying him.

Following the backlash, Italy’s advertising standards authority, the IAP, ordered the commercial to be taken off air. Amica Chips has seven days to appeal the decision, during which time the ad will continue to be broadcast. The ruling does not apply to online placements.

Social media users also expressed their outrage, with one Instagram user commenting, “This is blasphemy! Respect Our Lord Jesus in the Holy Eucharist!” Another user called for a boycott of the company, stating, “You don’t play with God. To my Italian friends, I suggest a total boycott of this company.”
