Chelsea secured their fifth successive Women’s Super League, WSL title with an emphatic 6-0 victory at Manchester United on the final day of the season.

Emma Hayes’ side beat Manchester City to the title on goal difference as the 47-year-old manager signed off her reign with a seventh WSL title as Chelsea boss.

Chelsea, who began the day level on points but two clear of City on goal difference, cruised to victory at Old Trafford with a double from Mayra Ramirez and goals from Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, Sjoeke Nusken, Melanie Leupolz and the departing Fran Kirby.

City won 2-1 at Aston Villa, with goals from Mary Fowler and Lauren Hemp, but finish seven goals behind Chelsea on goal difference in the WSL league table.

Hayes will become manager of the United States women’s team before this summer’s Olympic Games in Paris.

In addition to her seven WSL titles with Chelsea, she has won five FA Cups, two League Cups and a Community Shield during her Blues career.

Chelsea captain Millie Bright, speaking to Sky Sports: “It was pretty special but when half the country writes you off… we’ve got the monster mentality, we’ve shown it season after season.

“We were given a second chance, they don’t often but you have to take them and we did. We beat Bristol City, beat Tottenham and we’ve come here and put on a five-star performance to take this title.

“It’s extra special to get it for Emma [Hayes] and the players who are leaving us.

“We were up against a tough opponent and we needed a 10 out of 10 performance. Every player was incredible.

“That’s our standards, we shouldn’t be underestimated to make this sort of comeback because we’re defending champions.

Meanwhile, Manchester City goalkeeper Khiara Keating speaking to BBC Two said: “Obviously we are disappointed. We wanted to go out and win a trophy today. We knew what we had to do and we didn’t quite get it done. Hoepfully next season in the Champions League we can show what we’re about and go and win some trophies.

“From a personal point of view, my breakout season, had a lot to prove at the start of the season, everyone was kind of.. not doubting but wondering what I’d be like. I hope I’ve shown everyone what I can do.
