Abuja Man To Serve Four Years With Hard Labour For Assaulting Pregnant Wife

A Senior Magistrates’ Court in Gwagwalada, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has sentenced 39-year-old security guard, Thiouma Kwawi, to four years in prison for assaulting his wife with a cable wire, resulting in grievous injuries.

Kwawi was convicted of criminal force, assault, and causing grievous hurt. Despite his plea for mercy, Senior Magistrate Munir Sani handed down the sentence.

For the first charge, Kwawi received two years imprisonment or the option to pay a fine of N200,000. For the second charge, he was sentenced to two years imprisonment without the option of a fine.

Additionally, the court ordered Kwawi to pay N200,000 in compensation to his wife for her medical expenses. He will serve his sentence at Suleja Correctional Centre with hard labor.

The incident was reported by the prosecuting counsel, Dabo Yakubu, who stated that Kwawi’s 19-year-old wife, Kauna Jedi, of Mopol Barrack Kuje Junction, Abuja, filed a complaint at Iddo police station on June 1. Yakubu detailed that Kwawi had used a stone and cable wire in assaulting his pregnant wife, inflicting severe injuries.

The offenses violated Sections 267 and 247 of the Penal Code. According to Section 247, anyone who voluntarily causes grievous hurt, except as provided by Section 245, faces a punishment of up to seven years imprisonment and a fine.
