Lagos House Help With Knack For Stealing Foreign Currencies In Soup After $20,000 Theft

A house help in Lagos has found herself in hot water once again after allegedly stealing $20,000 from her new employer, just two months after being released from prison for a previous theft.

In a video circulating on social media, the woman, who had been previously convicted for stealing €1,500 in cash and a N22 million wristwatch from her former employer, expressed regret for her actions. “I didn’t think twice and life was hard for me,” she confessed during an interrogation, asking for forgiveness and promising not to steal again if set free.

The Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, shared the story of the house help on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, detailing the woman’s criminal history. “Her employer knew nothing about her, yet employed her!” he wrote. “Last year, in Ikate, she stole her boss’ €1,500 cash and a N22 million wristwatch, got arrested, prosecuted, and jailed for one year at Kirikiri prison.”

Hundeyin further explained that the house-help was released from prison in January this year and secured another job as a housemaid in March, only to steal $20,000 in cash from her new employer shortly after.

The video, which shows the woman being interrogated, has sparked a range of reactions online. Many users have criticized the lack of proper background checks by employers, while others expressed sympathy for the woman’s situation.
