The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has officially launched an investigation following the circulation of a viral video showing a female traveler who allegedly tore the Nigerian Standard Passport of her husband at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

According to a press release from the NIS, the traveler who tore the passport of her husband has been identified and summoned for further investigation. The video, which gained widespread attention on social media, captured the moment when the woman tore her husband’s international passport during an altercation.

The NIS stated that if the allegations were substantiated, the woman’s actions would constitute a breach of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended). The Act outlines specific penalties for such offenses under Section 10(h).

The Nigeria Immigration Service has reiterated its commitment to upholding the provisions of the Immigration Act, safeguarding national security, and preserving the integrity of the country’s legal instruments.

The press release was signed by DCI KT Udo, the Service Public Relations Officer at the NIS Headquarters in Abuja, and dated 11th August 2024.

This development follows a report by GWG.ng highlighting the disturbing incident involving the woman and her husband’s passport, which has now prompted the NIS to take official action.

The outcome of the investigation into the incident where the woman tore the passport of her husband is eagerly awaited as the NIS continues to address this serious breach.
