Breaking: Supreme Court Upholds ‘Miracle’ In Decision On Bayelsa Governorship Election
The Supreme Court of Nigeria has upheld the election of Senator Douye Diri as the legitimate governor of Bayelsa State, upholding his ascendancy as the miracle governor who came to power upon a last-minute miracle four years ago.
The Supreme Court judgment affirming that the incumbent Miracle Governor, Senator Douye Diri won the election last November was a decisive blow to the legal challenge brought by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its governorship candidate, Timipre Sylva.
In its judgment delivered on Friday, the apex court dismissed the appeal filed by Sylva and the APC, describing the case as lacking merit and a gross abuse of the judicial process. The ruling was led by Justice Garba Lawal, who confirmed that the appeal failed to present any substantial evidence to warrant overturning the election results.
This unanimous decision by the Supreme Court is consistent with previous rulings by both the Court of Appeal and the Bayelsa Governorship Election Petition Tribunal. On July 18, the Court of Appeal in Abuja had upheld the tribunal’s earlier decision from May 27, which rejected Sylva’s petition challenging Diri’s victory in the November 11, 2023, governorship election.
The tribunal, under the leadership of Justice Adekunle Adeleye, had ruled that Sylva and the APC were unable to provide credible evidence to substantiate their claims of irregularities in the election. With this latest ruling, the position of Senator Douye Diri as governor of Bayelsa State has been firmly secured and the miracle undiluted.
