Monday Okpebholo, the governorship candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, has found himself under fire after a controversial statement about road repairs.

In an interview with BBC Pidgin, Okpebholo boldly claimed that if elected governor, he would repair interstate roads in the state using N10 million and then claim N20 million from the federal government.

His remarks have sparked widespread outrage, with many Nigerians flooding the comment section on social media to express their displeasure. Some accused him of openly endorsing corrupt practices, while others tagged Nigeria a “lawless country” where such behavior is expected.

One user commented, “This is why we can’t move forward as a nation. He’s basically telling us he’ll inflate contracts, and no one will bat an eye.” Another wrote, “He’s already preparing to steal, and yet people will still vote for him. Nigeria is truly a lawless country.”

Others questioned the ethical implications of such a statement from a potential leader. “If a governorship candidate can say this so casually, imagine what happens behind closed doors,” a user lamented, while another added, “This man just admitted to theft, and some people will still clap for him. Shame!”

Despite the backlash, some supporters of Okpebholo have defended him, claiming he was simply referring to how state governments get reimbursed by the federal government for handling interstate infrastructure projects. However, the outrage from netizens continues to grow, with many calling for greater scrutiny of such remarks ahead of the September 21 gubernatorial election in Edo State.

Read other netizens’ reactions to his controversial statement below;

@arthur: Massive rigging loading, because there’s no way any right thinking person would vote this fella. Edo people it’s left to you to accept the rigging.

@sabina: Standards and principles have so fallen that many don’t even know what and what constitutes corruption/stealing anymore.Just look at a governorship candidate saying that he would steal and with a straight face.

@dearpurple: How did this man get “voted” into the senate in the first place? Is this the best Edo can boast of? Smh 🤦‍♂️

@agbalaka: Lawless country ruled by criminals and emboldened by Tulumbu as the leader

@curious: Use 10m but claim 20m… wonderment!

@m.i.dominic: I know a lot of people will take him out of context but here is it.Invest 10 million into federal roads.
Get 10 Million in profit back to the state purseThis should be a legal business. If the federal government isn’t okay with it, they should learn to fix their roads frequently.

The incident has raised concerns about governance and transparency, as voters prepare to make their choice between Okpebholo and other candidates like Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
