Governor N1.2 Billion Borehole Repair

A viral video featuring the governor of Sokoto, Ahmad Aliyu, has sparked outrage after he announced that N1.2 billion was allocated for the repair of 25 boreholes.

The speech, delivered in Hausa during a public address, revealed the staggering cost of the contract for the boreholes which many Nigerians even beyond Sokoto found shocking and excessive.

The announcement has triggered widespread reactions on social media, with many expressing disbelief and frustration. The video, posted by @NigeriaStories on X (formerly Twitter), has drawn countless comments criticizing the governor for the high cost of the project.

One user, @RobertAndrew30, sarcastically remarked, “Den too dey whine them for that North😂😂,” suggesting that such large sums are often unjustified. Another user, @IgbarumaE, added, “Nah Northern politicians really spoil this our country Nigeria,” blaming politicians for mismanaging funds.

The core issue that enraged many Nigerians is the astronomical amount for what seemed like a simple repair job. @iszzyiniho1 reacted emotionally, “Blood of Jesus 💔😭 So Each borehole costs at least 70M naira 😭💔,” while @jakartadc01 couldn’t believe the audacity, commenting, “1.2 billion for 25 boreholes ke? He nor even fear as he dy talk am.”

Several others echoed their concerns over the lack of accountability. @EmmanuelAlufa accused, “Fraud how is this even possible? They use not even up to 300m and embezzled the rest.” Another commenter, @TundeOlade12220, lamented, “These people have no fear at all, cheating us and taking us for fools. We have to wake up one day and fight back, it can’t continue like this.”

For many, the Sokoto proposal was more perplexing because the amount was for repairs and not new boreholes.

@otakerioghenero questioned, “How much did Peter Obi use to install those boreholes in the north?” and @munahkraft humorously added, “Repair not even construct, and it’s likely not even industrial boreholes. Kai! 🤣🤣.”

Despite some who provided counterpoints like @oshinterbz, who claimed to have proof that repair work was ongoing, the general sentiment leaned heavily toward disbelief and anger. @freshkeem49 criticized the governor’s priorities, stating, “Na their people plenty pass for bus stop Dey do Almájiri, Dey beg up and down but he’s here awarding an audio contract worth billions.”

The public outcry continues, with calls for greater transparency and accountability from government officials, as Nigerians remain frustrated with the state of governance and financial mismanagement.
