IGP prosecution anti-kidnapping shooting incident

The Nigeria Police Force has provided an update on the ongoing case involving a member of the House of Representatives, Alexander Ikwechegh, and a Bolt driver named Stephen Abuwatseya.

According to a police statement released on Monday, Abuwatseya officially reported the incident at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters. The police explained that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command is now overseeing the investigation. The statement also advised the public against using the name or position of the Inspector-General of Police to intimidate others.

The police’s statement reads: “The Nigeria Police Force is aware of the incident between a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, and Hon. Alexander Ikwechegh, which took place on October 27, 2024, in Maitama, Abuja. The FCT Command is actively handling the case following Mr. Abuwatseya’s official report at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters. The Police Force also urges the public to refrain from using the name or office of the Inspector-General of Police to intimidate others, as such actions undermine the values of impartiality that the IGP’s office upholds.”

GWG.ng reports that a video of the altercation between the lawmaker and the Bolt driver has been widely shared online. The incident occurred during the delivery of a package to Ikwechegh’s residence in Maitama, Abuja. In the footage, the lawmaker is seen repeatedly slapping and insulting the driver after the driver asked him to come outside to receive a delivery of snails.

Ikwechegh is heard in the video expressing anger over the driver’s request, claiming it was disrespectful considering his social status. He went on to threaten the driver, saying he could make him “disappear” without consequence. When the driver asked for the delivery fee, Ikwechegh allegedly slapped him again, questioning if he understood who he was speaking to.

When he noticed the driver was recording, Ikwechegh challenged him to capture the incident fully and even suggested he call the Inspector-General of Police.
