Ndume senator Ubah's widow

Some Nigerians have criticized Senator Ali Ndume of Borno South for proposing that the widow of the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah take his place as the representative of Anambra South Senatorial District.

Ndume made this plea during a valedictory session held on Tuesday to honor the late senator, suggesting that such an action would preserve Ubah’s legacy and fulfill his aspirations through his family.

Ndume defended his position by referencing historical examples, arguing that appointing the widow would both honor Ubah’s contributions and ensure continuity in representing his constituency.

However, his suggestion sparked widespread backlash, with many questioning whether political offices are now being treated as hereditary or family properties.

One critic, @chimm_di, wrote, “I don’t understand… succeed him as per? His property or family inheritance? This country sev.”

Another, @orefolayan, asked, “Is the Senate seat a Monarchy? Which one be ‘succeed him’?”

Others echoed similar sentiments, questioning the rationale behind Ndume’s suggestion. @kelvin_hartz commented, “A widow that should be mourning her husband,” while @adumaadand6 questioned, “Are we now practicing a hereditary monarchical system of government in the Senate? Is it a family heirloom that needs to be inherited?”

Several commentators expressed their concerns about the perceived shift in governance. @101fred remarked, “People now inherit government positions… hmmm,” while @innocent noted, “Just because some in the North and Lagos are treating elected positions as family inheritance doesn’t mean the South East tolerates such.”

In a similar vein, @augustine_vivian lamented, “So politics has suddenly become family HERITAGE,” and @meyer7xxx added, “It’s not a thing of competence; it’s a family business, and they are no longer bothered dishing it out in our faces.”

These reactions reflect growing dissatisfaction with what many see as an erosion of democratic principles in favor of nepotism and hereditary politics.
