Lagos State Clarifies Viral Video, Denies Sachet Water Ban
The Lagos State Government has refuted claims that it has imposed a ban on sachet water.
The clarification was issued by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, through a statement shared on his official X account on Sunday.
The statement came in response to a viral video showing officials destroying packs of sachet water at factories and on buses in Lagos. Addressing the situation, Wahab explained that the individuals seen in the video were not Lagos State enforcement officers but personnel from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
“My attention has been drawn to a viral video showing some individuals bursting sachet water packs at factories and on buses,” Wahab said. “I wish to categorically state that these individuals are not enforcement officers from any Lagos State Government agency or the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.”
He added, “Upon investigation, it was confirmed that the individuals in question are enforcement officers from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). Their actions are part of an enforcement exercise targeting sachet water that does not comply with NAFDAC regulations and in the interest of public health and safety.”
The commissioner emphasized that Lagos State has not banned sachet water nor plans to do so. Instead, the government is focusing on managing plastic waste effectively.
“It is important to emphasise that Lagos State has not banned sachet water and does not have plans to do so. Our focus remains on effective plastic waste management,” Wahab stated.
He further explained that the state is implementing mandatory Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for manufacturers of polythene terephthalate (PET), sachets, and carrier bags with a thickness of no less than 40 microns. This initiative aims to promote environmental sustainability and reduce waste pollution across Lagos.
