Human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, has been granted bail by the Ekiti State High Court.

The court set the bail amount at ₦50 million and required a surety with the same financial commitment.

As part of the bail conditions, the surety must own a landed property. The case has been adjourned to January 29, 2025, for further proceedings.

Farotimi’s legal troubles began after he was arrested by the Ekiti State Police Command following a defamation lawsuit filed by Chief Afe Babalola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. Babalola, who is 95 years old, alleged that Farotimi defamed him in a book titled ‘Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System’.

The arrest triggered widespread criticism from across the country. Civil society groups and the Nigerian Bar Association strongly condemned the arrest and demanded Farotimi’s immediate release.
