Farotimi: Peter Obi Under Fire For ‘Begging’ Afe Babalola
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has criticized Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, for allegedly seeking to mediate with Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Afe Babalola on behalf of lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi.
Farotimi is currently facing trial for alleged defamation related to statements in his book, ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System.’
Farotimi was recently arraigned in court and remanded in a correctional facility. On Monday, the same court granted him bail set at ₦50 million. Reports surfaced that Peter Obi visited Afe Babalola in Ado Ekiti on Monday to discuss the legal issues surrounding Farotimi. According to sources, Obi appealed to Babalola to forgive Farotimi.
Reacting to the development, Sowore took to Facebook to condemn the visit. He accused Obi and others involved of undermining the fight against judicial corruption in Nigeria. Sowore expressed strong disapproval, describing the visit as an act of betrayal.
“I strongly condemn those who went to ‘beg’ Chief Afe Babalola today regarding the unjust detention and persecution of Dele Farotimi,” Sowore wrote. “The delegation led by Mr. Peter Obi has committed an unspeakable and despicable injustice in the fight against judicial corruption in our country.”
Drawing an analogy to the Civil Rights Movement, Sowore compared Obi’s actions to forcing Rosa Parks to give up her stand against racial injustice. He concluded his post by reaffirming his commitment to the ongoing struggle for justice: “The struggle continues!”
