Yahaya Bello Granted Bail

The Federal High Court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) granted bail to former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello on Friday, setting the bail amount at ₦500 million.

The decision was delivered by Justice Emeka Nwite, who outlined strict conditions for the bail.

As part of the conditions, Bello must provide two sureties who will also post ₦500 million each. The sureties are required to swear to an affidavit of means and own properties within Abuja. Justice Nwite further instructed that the title documents for these properties would be verified by the court’s Deputy Chief Registrar.

The court also mandated that Bello surrender his international passport and submit two recent passport photographs alongside his sureties. Until these conditions are met, the former governor will remain in custody at the Kuje Correctional Center in Abuja.

Bello, who faces allegations of misappropriating ₦80 billion, pleaded not guilty to the 19-count charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The charges include money laundering and misuse of state funds during his tenure as governor.

The EFCC had initially arraigned Bello before Justice Nwite, emphasizing the gravity of the allegations. The case will proceed as the court awaits the fulfillment of the bail conditions.
