Okpebholo's petition Suspension Of LG Chairmen In Edo

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP dominated Edo State House of Assembly has suspended all 18 elected local government chairmen in the state for alleged insubordination and misconduct.

The suspension was announced during a plenary session on Tuesday.

This action follows a petition from Governor Monday Okpebholo, who accused the local government chairmen of failing to submit financial accounts of their councils to the state government. Okpebholo described their actions as insubordination and gross misconduct, urging the House to address the issue.

In response, the House directed that legislative leaders in the 18 local governments would manage the affairs of the councils for the next two months. The motion to suspend the chairmen and their deputies was introduced by Isibor Addeh, an APC member from Esan North-East I, and seconded by Donald Okogbe, a PDP member from Akoko-Edo II.

After the debate, 14 members voted in favor of the suspension, six voted against it, and three abstained. The 18 local government chairmen and 192 councillors were elected on September 2, 2023.

On December 3, 2024, Governor Okpebholo had given the chairmen 48 hours to submit the financial statements of their respective councils to the Assets Verification Committee.
