Humble Pie! Man City May Miss Champions League – Guardiola
By Benjamin Abioye
Pep Guardiola, manager of Manchester City, has openly acknowledged the risk that his team could miss out on qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
In a candid admission, Guardiola said, “We are definitely at risk. If we don’t qualify, it is because we don’t deserve it, because we were not prepared, because we have a lot of problems and didn’t solve those problems, and didn’t find a way to win games.”
His words highlight the challenging position City finds itself in, with their current form in stark contrast to the high standards the club had set in recent years.
Guardiola went on to discuss the potential consequences of failing to secure a Champions League spot. “Financial is an issue, of course it is, but it’s not just that. I know what it is because it happened at clubs in this country, many years they were dominant and after have been many years not qualifying for the Champions League,” he explained. The financial impact would be significant, but Guardiola emphasized that the prestige and long-term implications are just as crucial for the club’s continued success.
Despite City’s current struggles, Guardiola remains determined to turn things around. He called for more effort from everyone involved, stressing, “Everyone has to do more, simple. I have to, the players have to. Even uncomfortable things and difficult things, have to do more.” This was a direct plea for the team to step up and address their current challenges with urgency and focus.
Guardiola also acknowledged the intense competition for Champions League places, noting, “There are a lot of contenders. For every club, it is so important. And right now, we are out, and if we are not winning games, we will be out.” This recognition of the pressure from other teams further underscores the critical need for City to recover their form and secure a spot in the prestigious tournament.
Lastly, Guardiola expressed confidence in the club’s leadership, particularly in his relationship with City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak. “When there is a moment that something wrong happens we are going to take decisions, but I feel incredible support from him – of course from Txiki [Begiristain, director of football], Ferran [Soriano, chief executive], but especially Khaldoon in those terms,” Guardiola said, emphasizing the trust and backing from the club’s top officials as they navigate this difficult period.
