The Lagos State Police Command has refuted reports suggesting that Ayomide Adeleye, who confessed to killing his friend and neighbor, Christianah Idowu, is not in any correctional facility in Lagos.

This clarification comes after an investigative report by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) raised concerns about Adeleye’s whereabouts, citing multiple sources within the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) that he was not in custody.

In its earlier publication, FIJ reported that despite Ayomide Adeleye’s confession in September and a court-ordered remand, no record of his custody for murder existed in Lagos correctional facilities. The report noted that insiders in the police force had heard rumors of his release, fueling anxiety among Idowu’s family and friends about the status of the murder case.

FIJ claimed it contacted credible sources within the NCoS, who confirmed that while two individuals named ‘Ayomide Adeleye’ had been held at the Ikoyi and Kirikiri Medium correctional facilities, both had been released, and neither faced murder charges. Attempts to reach police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin for clarification initially went unanswered, while the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, promised to investigate the claims.

However, SP Hundeyin later issued a firm rebuttal, stating, “We can confirm that Ayomide Adeleye was charged with murder and remains remanded for the same offence. Confusion arose from another individual bearing the same name who was remanded for a different matter and released earlier in 2024.”

He criticized FIJ’s reliance on unnamed sources instead of official channels, warning that such misinformation undermines public trust. “An outfit that prides itself on investigation should live up to its name,” Hundeyin added.

Ayomide Adeleye, a 200-level Philosophy student of Olabisi Onabanjo University, had confessed to killing Idowu, a 300-level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. He was arraigned before Magistrate Seyi Omodara at the Ogba Magistrate Court on November 5, where a remand warrant was issued for his detention at Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending the Directorate of Public Prosecutions’ (DPP) advice.
