Nathaniel Bassey Faces Backlash Over Trump Inaugural Breakfast
By Gideon Ayeni
Renowned gospel artiste Nathaniel Bassey has found himself at the center of controversy following his announcement that he will be ministering at the Presidential Inaugural Prayer Breakfast for U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.
Donald Trump Inaugural prayer breakfast is set to take place on January 20, 2025, in Washington, D.C. where Nathaniel Bassey will be ministering.
In an Instagram post, Nathaniel Bassey expressed excitement about the opportunity to lead worship at the gathering of Christian leaders, policymakers, and worshippers from around the world.
Nathaniel Bassey described it as a platform for reflection and intercessory prayers for the Trump new administration and the nation. “Let’s raise a sound in America. And let the King of Glory come in. See you. 20th January, 2025,” he wrote.
The event, hosted by Reverend Merrie Turner, is a non-governmental, faith-based tradition preceding every presidential inauguration in the United States. It aims to invoke divine guidance for the government at the start of each new term.
However, the announcement has not been well received by everyone. A section of social media users criticized Nathaniel Bassey for associating with Trump, a figure polarizing for his political and social stances. One Twitter user described the singer’s participation as “a disgusting betrayal of everything Christianity claims to stand for,” accusing him of aligning with questionable values.
This isn’t the first time Bassey has faced public criticism. Months ago, popular media personality Daddy Freeze criticized him for launching a religious challenge instead of encouraging Nigerians to register for their Permanent Voter Cards (PVC). Freeze remarked that after decades of prayers without tangible results, more practical actions were needed.
Similarly, controversial commentator Daniel Regha recently cautioned Christians against invoking “the God of Nathaniel Bassey,” urging them to focus on Biblical figures with established scriptural references instead.
Despite the backlash, Bassey’s supporters have praised his global recognition and continued influence in spreading the gospel through music, even as debates over faith and political affiliations continue to fuel heated discussions online.
