Christ Mitots School in Ikorodu, Lagos, has suspended a teacher, Stella Nwadigo indefinitely after a video showing her assaulting a three-year-old pupil, Abayomi Michael, during a numeracy lesson sparked widespread outrage.

The disturbing footage, which went viral on social media, captured the now suspended teacher, Stella Nwadigo, repeatedly assaulting the young boy for struggling with his classwork. The incident drew sharp criticism from the public and led to her arrest on Wednesday.

In response to the backlash, the school released a statement condemning the teacher’s actions, calling them unacceptable and contrary to its core values.

“The video circulating online depicts conduct that is entirely unacceptable and inconsistent with our school’s principles,” the statement read. “We are committed to ensuring a safe and nurturing learning environment, and such behavior will not be tolerated.”

The management confirmed that Stella Nwadigo has been suspended indefinitely while a comprehensive investigation is underway.

“We have taken swift action by suspending the teacher involved as a reflection of our zero-tolerance stance on misconduct, especially actions that endanger the well-being of our students,” the statement continued.

The school also extended a formal apology to Michael’s family, pledging full support and engagement throughout the investigation.

“To the family of the affected pupil, we offer our deepest apologies and have reached out to address their concerns directly,” the school added.

In an effort to prevent future occurrences, Christ Mitots School announced immediate reforms, including mandatory training for all teachers on child protection and positive disciplinary practices. A confidential whistleblowing system has also been introduced to encourage the prompt reporting of inappropriate behavior.

The management reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a culture of respect, care, and safety, promising to take all necessary steps to uphold these standards.

GWG.ng reports that besides being suspended that Stella Nwadigo is presently being investigated for prosecution by state authorities.
