Suspended Catholic Priest's Sister

The sister of suspended Catholic priest Rev. Fr. Daniel Oghenerukevwe, Mary Okanatotor, has defended her brother’s decision to marry, calling it the “best decision” for him.

Mary explained that Fr. Oghenerukevwe had struggled with mental health issues for a long time and could not deal with the loneliness of priesthood. She shared, “He had a lot of issues with his mental health for a long time and couldn’t deal with the loneliness.” She also mentioned that the family had not been physically present to support him during his difficult moments, writing, “We, his family members, are not with him to give him support physically.” She expressed gratitude for the public’s encouraging words, adding, “Thank you for your encouraging words.”

Mary further clarified that Fr. Oghenerukevwe did not secretly marry, stating that her brother had informed the Diocese of his decision, writing, “He did not do a secret marriage as he wrote to the Diocese to inform them of his decision.” She concluded with a heartfelt sentiment, saying, “This is a trying time for our family, but he who finds a wife finds a good thing.” Her words were a testament to her support for his new life.

Fr. Oghenerukevwe’s suspension followed his marriage to Dora Chichah in Dallas, USA, on December 29, 2024, without receiving the necessary clearance from the Church. As a result, the Diocese of Warri issued a “Latae Sententiae suspension” under Canon 1394 S1, stating that he violated his canonical obligations. Although Fr. Oghenerukevwe had requested to be released from his priestly duties in November 2024, he did not complete the required procedure before marrying.

The Diocese clarified that, while Fr. Oghenerukevwe had informed them of his decision, he failed to complete the formal process for his release. He is now prohibited from presenting himself as a priest in any capacity.

However, the Diocese noted that he could petition for the revocation of the suspension if he demonstrates a willingness to reform. The Church concluded their statement by praying for his reflection and reconciliation.
