Why Selena Gomez Lost 800,000 Instagram Followers In One Month
By Benjamin Abioye

Selena Gomez has experienced a significant decline in her Instagram following, losing over 800,000 followers in the past month.
Selena Gomez lost 800,000 Instagram followers in January following her involvement in the film “Emilia Pérez” and a tearful video she shared addressing the deportation of Mexican immigrants in the United States.
“Emilia Pérez” has received critical acclaim and leads the nominations for the 2025 Academy Awards. However, it has sparked controversy in Latin America, particularly in Mexico, due to its portrayal of drug cartel violence and the casting of non-Mexican actors in leading roles. Gomez’s performance, especially her Spanish language skills, has faced criticism.
The walk away from her on Instagram intensified when Selena Gomez posted a video on January 27, 2025, showing her in tears over the deportation of Mexican immigrants. She stated, “Toda mi gente está siendo atacada,” which translates to “All my people are being attacked.” The video received backlash, particularly from conservative followers, leading her to delete it and later express disappointment over the criticism.
As a result of these controversies, Selena Gomez’s Instagram following has decreased by 132,625 followers, with the most significant loss occurring on January 28, 2025, when she lost over 44,000 followers in a single day.
This decline has raised concerns about the impact on her public image and professional ventures, including her successful makeup line, Rare Beauty.
However, GWG.ng reports that Selena Gomez remains one of the most followed persons on Instagram with an estimated 422 million persons following her.
