Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents the Delta North Senatorial District, has explained why he left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He stated that his departure was due to a lack of support from Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, which made it difficult for him to perform his duties effectively.

There had been speculation about his defection, with some claiming that he left PDP because he was afraid of losing his ticket for the 2027 elections. However, Nwoko dismissed these claims, stating that his main reason for leaving was the opposition he faced regarding the creation of Anioma State.

“I left because I want to be able to get the support of the ruling party in the creation of Anioma state,” he clarified.

Nwoko accused the governor and Okowa of working against the proposal for Anioma State. He also mentioned that he sought support from the PDP leadership, but internal conflicts within the party prevented any progress.

“The governor and Okowa, who are the leaders of PDP, are against the creation of Anioma state. I sought the support of PDP National, but they have been embroiled in destructive fights and have been unable to show leadership,” Nwoko stated.

He further alleged that the governor blocked his efforts by refusing to support important projects that were promised during election campaigns, citing financial difficulties as the reason.

“The governor made sure that I wasn’t allowed to function. He dismissed all the projects that we had discussed during the campaigns, citing a lack of funds,” he said.

Nwoko highlighted two major projects—the Okpai power plant and the Ogwashi-Uku dam—as examples of initiatives that were not supported. He also revealed that he was not allowed to nominate board members, commissioners, or local government chairmen.

“I wasn’t allowed to nominate any board members, commissioners, or local government chairmen. I had to join the ruling party so as to be able to attract projects to my constituency. Time is running,” he added.
