Nigerian Comedian Turned Preacher Sparks Debate About Loving Nigeria
By Benjamin Abioye

Nigerian comedian and preacher Woli Arole has sparked a heated debate online after urging Nigerians to celebrate their citizenship just as they do when acquiring foreign ones.
However, Woli Arole’s exhortation about taking pride in the country was received with mixed reactions, with many questioning what exactly there is to celebrate about being Nigerian.
Arole took to Instagram to express his thoughts, wondering why people proudly announce their citizenship in countries like the UK, Canada, and the US, while those born Nigerian rarely acknowledge or celebrate it.
“Why do people celebrate citizenship of UK, Canada, and America, and me wey I dey Naija never celebrate my own? Abeg John, Feyi, Flo, Charles, let’s celebrate jor. Who’s celebrating with ME?” he wrote.
While some people supported his sentiment, others were quick to challenge it. A Twitter user, @dammygtnet, agreed that Arole had a point but noted, “We can hardly point to what we stand to benefit as Nigerians.” Another user, @lifeinsolace, echoed the same thought, asking, “What are the benefits of being Nigerian, that should be celebrated?”
Some took a more sarcastic approach, with @tearscollect joking, “If you see 10 persons to celebrate with you, call me goat .” Another user, @Miraclejoe17, questioned whether Nigeria could be compared to those other countries, saying, “
shey the country na the same?
”
Others pointed out a key difference between being Nigerian and acquiring citizenship elsewhere as against the injunctions of Woli Arole. @PrettyMfon explained, “Your Nigerian citizenship was not acquired, but for the rest, you have to go through a process, and that’s enough reason to celebrate.”
Some users showed frustration with how Nigerians are treated in their own country. @Olatu125 remarked, “That depends on how Nigeria treats her citizens,” while @ImpactTogether brought up the struggle of getting a national ID, saying, “Do you have your NIN original plastic card at the moment? Check the date you applied and check how long you have been dwelling on paper as your ID card. It’s not the same over there bro. There is nothing to celebrate.”
On the other hand, a few users supported Arole’s stance. @NURUDEENOLUSESI proudly stated, “I celebrate Nigeria ,” and @omo_ola_eluku added, “God bless Nigeria
.” Some were also critical of Nigerians who constantly complain, with @OmasanJoy37606 saying, “There are celebrities that Nigeria has made, and yet all they ever do is complain.”
Despite the mixed reactions, Arole’s post has ignited a broader conversation about national identity, the challenges of being Nigerian, and what it truly means to celebrate one’s citizenship.
