It was a sun set at dawn for Afenifere chieftain, Ayo Adebanjo who passed away on February 14 at the ripe age of 96 years. During his life time, he advocated  for the proper restructuring of Nigeria and believed that the country in its present state cannot meet the need  of the people.

Here are four things Ayo Adebanjo  believed and defended for it’s realisation when he was alive.

True federalism

Pa Adebanjo had never failed to condemn the present structure in Nigeria which gave a section of the country a better opportunity than the  rest.

He declared, ” The beginning of our problem in this country was the military coup of 1966. The people who want to do mischief, particularly our brothers from the North, are cheating us under the present structure imposed on us by the military in 1966″.

Igbo presidency

During the 2023 presidential election, Ayo Adebanjo along with people of like mind like Pa Edwin Clark advocated for power shift to South-east.

“All those who say the Southeast cannot be president, ask them what the Southeast has done? “ Are they not part of Nigeria? Is the Southeast not part of Southern Nigeria?

Open grazing

Late Adebanjo during his life time had condemned the incessant clashes between herders and farmer blaming the clash on open grazing as allowed by the government.

Local government autonomy

While Afenifere  through it leader, Ayo Adebanjo condemned corruption at all level of governance he however,  picked hole in the Supreme Court judgment that granted financial autonomy to local government administration.
