The Anambra State Police Command has addressed concerns following the escape of two suspects linked to the murder of Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly.
The suspects, who were in police custody, reportedly made their escape during a sting operation to lure another member of the gang involved in the kidnap and killing of Justice Azuka
,GWG.ng reports that the escape of the duo sparking public outrage in Nigerian news platforms and also fueled speculations that they may have been aided by officers.
Speaking during a press briefing on Friday, the new Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, clarified that the incident occurred before he assumed office.
“When I took over as Commissioner, I promised transparency. So, I want to provide clarity on the escape of two suspects in the lawmaker’s murder case,” Orutugu stated.
According to the Commissioner, the escape of the suspects took place on February 8 in Obosi in the course of a sting operation to capture one other principal suspect in the killing of Justice Azuka.
The two individuals, Ikemefuna Ossai and Chinedu Okoli, were among 11 people who had earlier confessed to involvement in the crime and were paraded by the police. However, they were not the principal suspects but had served as drivers for those directly responsible for the killing.
The escape occurred during a police operation aimed at arresting Tochukwu Okolisa, a suspect accused of purchasing Justice Azuka’s vehicle and belongings. To lure Okolisa, the police allowed Ossai and Okoli to pose as sellers of another car. However, during the sting operation, the duo managed to drive off, abandon the vehicle, and escape into a nearby bush.
Despite this setback, CP Orutugu assured the public that the key suspects remain in custody, and efforts are ongoing to track down the escaped individuals. He urged residents to remain calm and trust the police to complete their investigation and bring all those involved in the crime to justice.
