A large group of supporters gathered at the Lagos State House of Assembly complex, demanding the reinstatement of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker.

This came just hours after Obasa arrived at the Assembly on Thursday, escorted by security personnel with a handful of supporters.

Despite being impeached, Obasa insisted that he remains the rightful leader of the House. Speaking to journalists, he firmly stated, “I’ve resumed, and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly.”

Videos circulating online showed his supporters holding placards and chanting slogans in his favor, signaling strong opposition to his removal.

Obasa was impeached on January 13 while he was out of the country, and Mojisola Meranda was swiftly appointed as his replacement. Upon his return on January 25, he was welcomed by a large crowd of loyalists. Since then, he has continued to challenge the legitimacy of his removal on Nigerian news platforms, arguing that he was unfairly ousted.

In a related development, the reinstated Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, has threatened legal action against the acting Clerk, Ottun Babatunde, over a standoff at the Assembly complex. Onafeko, who was suspended the same day as Obasa’s impeachment, was blocked from entering his office despite a court ruling in his favor.

After challenging his suspension in court, Onafeko secured a judgment from the National Industrial Court on February 20, which ordered his reinstatement and Babatunde’s removal. The court’s decision followed an ex parte application filed by Onafeko’s lawyer, Yusuf Nurudeen. Justice M. N. Esowe directed both parties to maintain the status quo until further hearings.

The situation at the Assembly remains tense as both Obasa and Onafeko continue to push back against their removals with their supporters wishing them success.
