Senator Florence Ita-Giwa has castigated Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for raising the issue of sexual harassment in the Senate saying that female senators have passed the stage of being harassed.

She spoke in an interview with Arise News Television following the rumpus among many in Nigeria over the allegations of sexual harassment raised by Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Affirming that Akpoti-Uduaghan is no longer a college girl and as such should have developed enough self-confidence to have made herself unapproachable for sexual harassment, the former Cross River senator also remonstrated with her for confessing she sought her husband’s help in speaking to Akpabio to get her motion listed.

While she did not outrightly call Akpoti-Uduaghan a liar, Ita-Giwa suggested that such accusations should not be made at that level of politics. “I am not saying the lady is lying, but when you get to the Senate, you’re there as a person. You’re not there as a woman,” she added.

When asked whether female lawmakers should remain silent if they face harassment from colleagues, she maintained her position, insisting that making such claims reflects poorly on the women involved.

“It is the worst part of weakness for a woman to come out and accuse a man of sexual harassment at that level,” she said.

“By the time you have won election and entered the Senate you have passed the stage of being sexually harassed.

“I feel for the young girls in the universities who are growing up. By the time you grow up and decide to be a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, you must have built so much confidence.

“Do you know what it means to win election to get to the Senate. You struggle like a man, you were not given the mandate. That girl won election, that girl lost election, went to court and got to Senate. By the time you get there you have as much authority as the other men have.

“I am sorry if I am wrong, my personal opinion is that at that stage in the Senate if you come and say that somebody is sexually harassing you, it means weakness.  You make yourself unapproachable in the midst of men.”

Asked how a good looking woman like Natasha could make herself unapproachable, Ita-Giwa who said she was herself not ugly when in the Senate then remonstrated with Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for saying she sought the husband’s assistance to get her motion listed in the Senate.

“I like that girl too much and if you want to be honest why would you say that your husband went to London for your motion to be listed.”
