UK Extends Farm Workers’ Visa Scheme (See How To Apply)
By Gideon Ayeni

The United Kingdom (UK) has announced a five-year extension of its Seasonal Worker Visa Scheme, allowing farmers and food producers to continue hiring foreign workers on short-term contracts.
Initially set to end in 2021, the scheme was extended until 2024 following appeals from the National Farmers Union (NFU). Now, with the latest update, seasonal workers can stay in the UK for up to six months, ensuring continued support for the country’s agricultural sector.
Visa Allocations for 2025
The UK government has confirmed that 45,000 seasonal work visas will be issued in 2025, distributed as follows:
43,000 visas for horticulture jobs, including fruit and vegetable picking.
2,000 visas for poultry processing, valid between October 2 and December 31.
Only workers employed by approved scheme operators will be eligible for the program.
Who Can Apply?
To qualify for a Seasonal Worker Visa, applicants must:
Secure a job offer from an approved scheme operator.
Be at least 18 years old.
Provide proof of at least £1,270 in savings to support themselves in the UK.
Important Notice: Visa holders cannot bring dependents with them.
Application Process
- Find a Job: Secure employment through an approved recruitment agency.
- Obtain a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS): This document is required for the visa application.
- Apply Online: Pay the £264 application fee and book a biometrics appointment.
- Await Approval: Processing typically takes around three weeks.
Concerns Over Worker Conditions
Despite the extension, concerns persist over the treatment of seasonal workers. Reports indicate that some workers are tied to specific employers, making it difficult to leave if they experience poor conditions, wage theft, or abuse.
Kate Roberts, Head of Policy at Focus on Labour Exploitation (FLEX), cautioned:
“Seasonal Worker Visa holders currently have no realistic way to challenge poor working conditions, wage theft, or sexual harassment in the workplace.”
To avoid exploitation, prospective workers are advised to choose reputable scheme operators and familiarize themselves with their rights before traveling to the UK.
