Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs, has submitted a fresh sexual harassment petition against Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary.

The petition, presented on behalf of her constituents led by Zubairu Yakubu, comes amid ongoing tensions between both lawmakers. After submitting the document, Akpabio questioned whether any legal obstacles prevented its acceptance, to which Akpoti-Uduaghan responded that there were none.

At 12:38 p.m., Akpabio directed her to formally lay the petition before the Senate. It was then referred to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, chaired by Senator Neda Imasuen (LP, Edo South), with a mandate to review it and report back within four weeks.

This development follows a similar petition submitted by Akpoti-Uduaghan the previous day, which was dismissed as “dead on arrival.” Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Monguno (APC, Borno North) had argued that the matter was sub judice due to an ongoing court case between Akpoti-Uduaghan and Ekaette Akpabio, the wife of the Senate President. He further contended that the petition could not be considered since it was personally signed by the senator herself.

Beyond the petition, tensions between Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio have escalated in recent weeks. Just last Thursday, a dramatic confrontation unfolded in the Senate chamber after she arrived at the session to find her seat reassigned without prior notice. Her name had been removed, prompting her to demand an explanation from the Senate President.

With this latest petition, the rift between the two senators appears far from over, setting the stage for further political drama within the National Assembly.
